TAPESCRIPTS & EXPLANATION
Part 1: Dialogue
Lily: Thank you for agreeing to help me with my project, Mr. Evans. I need to ask you about your life when you were young.
Mr. Evans: It’s my pleasure, Lily. What would you like to know?
Lily: Well, first, did you go to university?
Mr. Evans: Oh no. In those days, many of us left school early. I wanted to stay until I was 16, but my father was ill, so I started my first job when I was just 14.
Lily: Wow, 14 is so young! How did you get to work? Did you take the bus?
Mr. Evans: The bus was only for rich people! I walked for the first year. Then, I saved enough money to buy a bicycle. That made things much easier.
Lily: And what did you do for fun? Did you play football?
Mr. Evans: My friends played football, but I wasn't very sporty. My favorite activity on Saturday afternoons was fishing. It was very peaceful sitting by the river.
Lily: Did you go to the cinema often?
Mr. Evans: Sometimes. It was a real treat. It’s expensive now, maybe 10 pounds, but back then, a ticket only cost 50 pence. Can you imagine?
Lily: That's amazing. Finally, did your family have any special traditions?
Mr. Evans: Yes. We were very busy during the week, but we always sat down together for a big roast lunch on Sundays. We never missed it.
Part 2: Monologue (Mrs. Turner)
Mrs. Turner: Good morning, everyone. I am here to update you on the renovation of our beloved Old City Library. As you look at the documents, you might see the date 1920. That is when the building was extended. However, the original structure is much older; it was actually built in 1890, making it one of the oldest buildings in town.
Many people think it has always been a library. That is not true. For the first thirty years, it served as a bank. You can still see the heavy metal safe in the basement where they kept the money. It only became a library in 1950.
Regarding the design, we are trying to preserve as much as possible. However, during the safety checks last year, the builders removed the heavy oak entrance door. Personally, I wish they had kept it, because the new glass door looks too modern and doesn't fit the style.
At the moment, the restoration work is very intense. Because of the dangerous equipment inside, the library is currently closed to the public. We hope to reopen it in December.
Finally, we have an exciting addition. Next month, we are not just finishing the roof, but we will also open a small coffee shop in the garden area, so you can read and enjoy a drink outside.
