PART 1: Dialogue (Sophie and David)
Sophie: Hi David, are you ready for the Harvest Moon Festival this weekend?
David: Almost. I’m packing my bags tonight. I’m really looking forward to it.
Sophie: How are you getting to your hometown? Are you taking the train like last year?
David: I wanted to, but the train tickets were sold out weeks ago. So, I booked a bus ticket instead. It takes longer, but it’s the only option left.
Sophie: That’s too bad. So, what happens at the festival? Is there a big feast?
David: Oh, yes. It’s the highlight of the holiday. In the past, my mom used to cook everything, but now it’s a potluck. Everyone brings one dish to share. It’s much easier for her.
Sophie: That sounds nice. Do you have any special customs during the dinner?
David: We do. After eating, we all go to the garden, sit on mats, and watch the full moon while drinking lotus tea. It’s very peaceful.
Sophie: Wow, that sounds amazing. I wish my family did something like that. We usually just watch TV.
David: You should join us someday!
Sophie: I’d love to. How long are you staying there?
David: Just for three days. I have to be back on Monday for school.
PART 2: Monologue (Mrs. Parker)
Mrs. Parker: Hello everyone, and welcome to our town. Today, I see many of you are planning to visit the ancient temple on the hill.
First, dress code. This is very important. Please ensure that your shoulders and knees are covered. I know it is summer and it’s hot, but shorts and tank tops are not allowed inside.
Second, regarding photography. We know you want to keep memories. You are free to take pictures in the gardens and the courtyard. However, photography is strictly prohibited inside the main worship hall.
Third, about offerings. If you wish to make an offering, please bring fresh fruit or flowers. Do not bring any meat dishes or alcohol.
Fourth, interaction with the monks. If you see a monk, please be respectful. Do not try to shake hands. A slight bow is the appropriate way to greet them.
Finally, and this is crucial, do not touch the statues. Some of them are very old and fragile.
