Tapescripts

David: Hi Maria. You're a member of the Language Club, right? I'm thinking of joining.

Maria: Oh, hi David! Yes, I am. You should definitely join, it's great. It’s a very practical way to improve your language abilities.

David: Cool. Does it mostly help with reading and writing?

Maria: We do a bit of that, but the main goal is to improve everyone's speaking skills. We want everyone to feel more confident when they talk.

David: That's exactly what I need. What kinds of activities do you do?

Maria: We do lots of things. Sometimes we watch short films or play language games. But the most popular activity is our weekly debates. We choose a fun topic and everyone gets to share their opinion. It’s a great way to connect with other members.

David: Debates? That sounds a bit scary, but fun. When do you meet?

Maria: We meet after school in the library. We used to meet on Fridays, but the schedule changed. Now we meet every Wednesday.

David: Okay, Wednesday. Is there a fee to join?

Maria: Yes, there's a small annual fee to cover materials. It used to be $20, which was a bit high for some students. So this year, it’s only $15.

David: $15 for the whole year? That’s reasonable. What should I bring to my first meeting? A textbook?

Maria: No, you don't need any textbooks. The club provides everything. Just bring a notebook and a pen to write down any new words you learn.

David: A notebook. Got it. Thanks so much, Maria! I'll see you there next Wednesday.

Mr. Evans: Good morning, students. Today I want to talk about something that is a big part of your lives: social media. It can be a fantastic tool, but it's important to use it wisely.

First, let's talk about the good things. Social media is a wonderful way to keep in touch with friends and family, especially those who live far away. Of course, you can also use it to learn new things or find out about current events, but its primary, most powerful use is for connection.

However, there are also dangers. You must be very careful with your personal information. While uploading photos or commenting on posts is usually fine, you should never, ever share private details like your home address or phone number online. That information can be used by the wrong people.

So, how do you know if you're spending too much time browsing your accounts? A clear sign is when your online life starts to negatively affect your real life. You might feel more tired or less focused, but the biggest red flag is when you start forgetting to do your schoolwork or chores. If that happens, you need to make a change.

What can you do? My first recommendation is to be proactive. Some people suggest turning off notifications, which can help. But a more effective strategy is to set a specific time limit for daily use. For example, decide you will only spend one hour on social media and stick to it.

And finally, my most important piece of advice is this: think before you post. It's easy to get caught up in the moment and write something you might regret later. Please remember that once something is online, it can be very difficult, sometimes impossible, to delete it completely. It can stay there forever. Be smart, be safe, and be kind online. Thank you.
