PART 1: Conversation
Receptionist: Good morning, City History Museum. How can I help you?
Leo: Hi, I'm calling to get some details about the "Lifestyle Through the Ages" exhibition for my school project.
Receptionist: Certainly. It's a wonderful exhibition.
Leo: Great. Could you tell me which room it is in? I know the art gallery is in the Rose Room.
Receptionist: Yes, the art is in the Rose Room, but the Lifestyle exhibition is in the LOTUS Room.
Leo: Lotus? Is that L-O-T-U-S?
Receptionist: That is correct. It's on the second floor.
Leo: Thanks. And how much are the tickets?
Receptionist: Standard tickets for adults are ten dollars. However, since you are a student, you get a discount. It is only five dollars for you.
Leo: Five dollars. That's perfect. What is the most interesting thing to see there?
Receptionist: Well, we have many photos, but the most popular item is a real cyclo. It was used in the city center during the 1980s. You can even sit in it for a photo.
Leo: A cyclo? Cool, I've never sat in one. Is there any guide or talk I can listen to?
Receptionist: Yes, today there is a special talk about the Ao Dai and changing fashion.
Leo: What time does that start?
Receptionist: It was scheduled for two o'clock, but the speaker is a bit late, so it will start at two thirty pm.
Leo: Two thirty. I can make that. Finally, does the gift shop sell anything special? I want to buy a souvenir.
Receptionist: We have some nice postcards, but they are sold out. Currently, we have a traditional flute made of bamboo. It's handmade and very beautiful.
Leo: A bamboo flute. Sounds interesting. Thank you very much!
PART 2: Monologue by Mr. Wilson
Mr. Wilson: Good afternoon. Today we are looking at the Lunar New Year, or Tet, and how it has evolved.
One of the biggest changes is the preparation. In the past, families spent weeks preparing food and decorations. However, modern life is much busier. Nowadays, people spend significantly less time on these preparations because they can buy almost everything ready-made at the supermarket.
Take the traditional food, Banh Chung, for example. Decades ago, every family would gather around a warm fire to cook the cakes overnight. It was a bonding activity. Today, especially in big cities, very few families have the space or time to do this. Instead, they prefer to buy the cakes from shops.
Another change is regarding "Lucky Money". Traditionally, the red envelope symbolized luck and good health. The amount of money inside didn't matter. Sadly, I have noticed that today, some children care too much about the value of the money inside, rather than the spiritual meaning of the wish.
Also, the way people spend the holiday is changing. In the past, Tet was strictly for family reunions at home. Recently, however, a new trend has emerged. Many families choose to travel abroad or go to resorts to relax during the holiday instead of staying home cooking and cleaning.
Despite these changes, some things remain. For instance, going to pagodas to pray for a good year is still a very strong tradition. You can still see thousands of people visiting temples during the first days of the year.
