PART 1 (Dialogue)
Kevin: Did you finish watching that documentary about the Hmong people for our history class, Sarah?
Sarah: Yes, I watched it last night. It was fascinating.
Kevin: I agree. The part about their festivals was cool, especially the music. But for me, the best part was the mountain scenery. It looked like a painting.
Sarah: Oh, really? I actually preferred the costumes. The patterns on their clothes are so intricate.
Kevin: True. And did you notice where they farm? It’s not flat like the farms near our city.
Sarah: Yes, they cut the steep hills into steps. The terraced fields look amazing, especially when the rice turns yellow.
Kevin: I wonder what material they use for those clothes. It looked heavy.
Sarah: I read about it. I thought it was wool because it looks warm, but they actually grow a plant called hemp to make linen. Then they dye it with indigo.
Kevin: Interesting. Hey, do you remember the scene with the young couple? The boy was playing an instrument.
Sarah: Was it the Khen? The big pipes?
Kevin: No, before that. He picked a green leaf from a tree and blew on it. It made such a high, beautiful sound.
Sarah: Oh, right. That was very romantic. Finally, the food scene. I felt hungry watching it.
Kevin: Me too. They were eating a round yellow cake.
Sarah: That was corn cake. Corn is their main food because it’s hard to grow rice on the high peaks.
Kevin: I definitely want to try that one day.
PART 2 (Monologue)
Simon: Good morning group. Today we are visiting the famous Bac Ha open-air market. Before we arrive, I want to tell you a few things.
First, you are very lucky to be here today. If you came yesterday, you would have seen an empty ground. This market does not open every day. It only happens once a week, on Sunday morning.
Second, the purpose of the market. Of course, people come here to buy and sell things like vegetables, honey, or knives. But more importantly, it is a place for socializing. It is where friends meet after a long week, and young people come to find husbands or wives.
Third, look at the fashion. In the city, you see people in jeans and T-shirts. But here, the market looks like a flower garden. The women wear their finest traditional costumes with very bright colours. It is very beautiful for photography.
Fourth, the food area. It smells very strong! You will see big pots of soup. That is a local specialty called "Thang Co". It is a stew made from horse meat. I encourage you to try a small bowl.
Finally, shopping. You won't find modern electronics or smartphones here. Instead, you can buy unique handmade items like silver bracelets, embroidered bags, or brocade fabrics to take home as gifts.
